Why is my dentist against doing teeth whitening before filling cavities?

Posted on July 15, 2017 by AllSmiles.

I’m wondering if you can tell me why my dentist might be against doing teeth whitening before filling my cavities. I want my teeth whitened for a family reunion / cruise. My dentist does in-office whitening but he wants me to have cavities filled first. The whitening is my priority because the reunion is in 3 weeks. I thought that I should get my teeth whitened first and fillings after to match. I’m confused. I asked him about his reasoning, but he pretty much said he prefers to do it that way. Before I go back to my dentist, I want to be sure that I understand the right order to get the work done. Which should be done first teeth whitening or fillings? And why would my dentist ask me to get the cavities filled first? Thanks. Nikki

Nikki – We’re not sure why your dentist is asking you to have your cavities filled first. Your teeth can be whitened first, but whether or not they should be depends on the condition of your teeth and the extent of your cavities. We’ll explain some factors for you to consider.

  • Prescription-strength teeth whitening can cause sensitivity in teeth. If you have untreated tooth decay, the bleaching gel can affect tooth nerves and cause much discomfort.
  • Some experts say that bleaching gel can irritate decayed teeth or make cavities worse and weaken your teeth.
  • If your teeth are whitened after cavities are filled, the fillings will be darker than your teeth. But this probably won’t be noticeable—particularly because cavities are usually placed on the biting surfaces of your teeth. Composite fillings are tooth colored and less noticeable anyway.

If you want your fillings to match your whitened teeth, ask your dentist again if whitening can be completed first. You can also try again to ask for an explanation as to why he prefers to fill your cavities first. The reason will likely make sense.

Additionally, you can consider getting a second opinion from a cosmetic dentist.

Can I get my teeth white by 2nd week of June?

Posted on May 30, 2014 by AllSmiles.

I should have planned better but I am in a wedding the 2nd weekend of next month and I really want my teeth white. Is it too late to start? What is the strongest formula that will work the best? – Bridget

Bridget – The strongest teeth whitening you can get is from a dentist. Unfortunately, you don’t have a lot of time to get it done.

If a dentist offers in-office teeth whitening, it can whiten your teeth quickly. In-office treatment is the most expensive form of teeth whitening available, but it will also give you quick results.

Take-home treatment from a dentist will give you professional-strength whitening gel. But you need customized whitening trays for it, and there may not be enough time for the dentist to have the trays made and for you to start your whitening treatment. A few days of whitening may make your teeth a little whiter.

You can start calling a few dentists’ offices in your area to find out what type of teeth whitening is offered and how soon you would be able to receive it.

Teeth whitening kit from the dentist hurts and burns!

Posted on January 14, 2014 by AllSmiles.

Hi. I got a teeth whitening kit from my dentist. I wanted to do things the right way and not get a cheap kit or something that would not work. I can tell that my teeth are getting whiter, but the kit is really hurting my teeth and making them feel like they are being shocked or zinged. Also my gums are burning and turning white. What is this stuff? What should I do now? thank you. – Renae W.

Renae – It is not unusual to experience some sensitivity during teeth bleaching, but what you describe is more intense than usual.

Stop using the teeth whitening kit, and contact your dentist and explain what you are experiencing. You may need a whitening gel that is not as strong. It is possible that the bleaching trays need to be adjusted so that the gel isn’t affecting your gums so much.

Additionally, be certain that you are closely following the instructions on how much bleaching gel to use in each tray and how long you are wearing the trays.

Contact your dentist for additional assistance.
